National Corn Yield Contest winners benefit from Headline fungicide by BASF

February 17, 2010

RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, NC, February 18, 2010 – Headline® fungicide played a key role in the success of nearly half of the most successful growers in the United States this past year.

Ten of the 24 recently-announced winners of the  National Corn Growers Association (NCGA) National Corn Yield Contest applied Headline fungicide to their winning cornfields. Three growers also benefited from other BASF crop protection products such as Clarity®, Status® and Guardsman® Max and Prowl® herbicides.

“This is yet another credit to the effectiveness of Headline fungicide,” said Nick Fassler, Market Development Manager for corn and soybean fungicides at BASF. “The use of Headline played a pivotal role in developing record yields for these leading growers, and plays the same type of role for many growers across the country.”

Specifically, Headline fungicide helped yield two first-place finishes, four second-place finishes, and four third-place finishes. By comparison, only four of the NCGA yield contest winners used another fungicide.

Headline fungicide provides excellent disease control and plant health -- helping maximize yields and growers’ investment in seed, fertilizer and other crop protection inputs. A fast-acting, broad-spectrum fungicide with a high level of activity on major diseases that threaten yield and crop quality, Headline fungicide is used to protect more than 90 crops including corn, soybeans and wheat, and controls more than 50 diseases.

“We’ve had significant response with Headline,” said NCGA Yield Contest winner David Hula, of Renwood Farms in Charles City, VA. “It really helps with plant health. In the Eastern United States, we’re very concerned with storm season, so we like our plants to have better stalk strength and standability. Headline has helped us achieve better plant health through each phase of the plant’s life, and, of course, that translates into higher yield.”

Not only does Headline fungicide provide excellent disease control and stress tolerance, it promotes growth efficiency through better use of nitrogen fertilizer. This means healthier plants and higher yield potential. The benefits of Headline fungicide are realized throughout the growing season in the form of optimized growth or Plant Health.

In more than 6,000 on-farm trials in the past five years, growers using Headline fungicide realized a yield advantage of 4-8 bu/A in soybeans, 12-16 bu/A in corn and 10-14 bu/A in cereals.

BASF is proud to be a sponsor of the NCGA’s annual National Corn Yield Contest.
