Her passion for agriculture communication has taken her far, and it’s just the beginning. To recognize Mara McGurl for her commitment and leadership in agriculture, she was selected to receive the NAFB Grow Smart™ Scholarship sponsored by BASF. This one-time scholarship, managed by the National Association of Farm Broadcasting (NAFB), provides financial support to students studying agricultural communications with a concentration in broadcast media.
Having grown up in Senoia, Ga., a rural community with only two red lights, Mara first began her work in agriculture in high school, when she took a job on a University of Georgia farm. She helped cultivate the small-scale farm, which focused on the production of vegetables and the raising of cattle. In 2010, she enrolled at UGA where she pursued a major in agricultural communication with a certificate in leadership and service. Currently, she holds an internship position at the UGA College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences in the Office of External Relations where she enjoys networking and interacting with people daily. Mara anticipates graduation in May 2017.
Mara doesn’t plan to slow down after that, in fact she wants to study under UGA’s Graduate Program to obtain a master’s degree in journalism and mass communication. Once she obtains that, her focus will be on finding an agricultural communications-oriented career path, whether it is a spokesperson for an organization, a representative of a company, or a broadcaster for a TV or radio station.
No matter where Mara’s bright future takes her, it is without a doubt that she will succeed and help shape the agriculture communications industry. BASF would like to thank Mara for her hard work and reward her with a $5,000 scholarship to continue to pursue her mission and help spread the importance of agriculture across the country.
